Mission Statement

The Lassen Retriever Club has served Shasta County and the surrounding northern California counties for several decades. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, it was formed by people who were dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of activities and events related to their retrievers.

Club members are dedicated to the preservation, enjoyment, training, competition and hunting of the retriever breeds.  This group includes Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Flat-coated Retrievers, Curly-coated Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniels, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, and Standard Poodles.

The love of their dogs and the skills that are learned through training, have helped to advance the status of the dogs as hunting and working retrievers. The entire membership believes now, even as they did when the club was first formed, that a well and properly trained retriever is the foremost conservation tool in the preservation of our waterfowl and upland game bird population.

The events sponsored by the Lassen Retriever Club are informal training sessions, picnic events for the entire family and American Kennel Club licensed field trials and hunting retriever tests. All of these events are held in Shasta County and surrounding areas on a regular basis.

An AKC licensed field trial is held every February. This trial attracts top field trial champion dogs from around the country and is one of the first trials to kick off the West Coast circuit.

An AKC licensed hunting test is held every March or April and again attracts top hunting dogs from the West Coast area. The hunting tests are set up with no competition between dogs, but against a set of standards and are geared more towards simulating natural hunting situations. Although the standards for each of these events are different, the ultimate goal of a well-trained and well-behaved retriever is the final reward.

If you feel that one of the retriever breeds is the dog for you, it only makes sense to enhance your enjoyment of your retriever by learning more about the breed. Part of your enjoyment should also be obedience training and the sharpening of hunting skills through actual training in the field in natural upland game and waterfowl settings.

No matter what the setting, one of the retriever breeds may be one of the most enjoyable companions that you will ever experience in your home and in the outdoors.
